Westador Westwind On-Line
Volume 36 Issue 7 July 16, 2006
WCA General
Meeting is to be July 20 at the Cali Clubhouse
The third quarterly meeting of the Westador Civic
Association will be held Thursday, July 20, 2006 at 7:30 PM at the Cali
clubhouse.
Receipts are $2,677 above budget and expenditures are $32,266
below budget resulting in a net change in cash that was $34,943 better than
budget. Collection of annual
maintenance fees and related costs are $2,979 above budget through the second
quarter. Trash service and security
costs are $8,068 below budget due to smaller rate increases than budgeted. A printing delay for the new directory led
to a temporary $2,748 favorable expense variance from budget. Insurance budgeted for payment in June was
paid in July resulting in a temporary favorable variance of $21,416.
Financial statements for the
quarter ended June 30, 2006, presented below, will be discussed in more detail
at the general meeting.

Wave Swim Team Takes Second Place
in Divisionals by Gail Wescott
Another swim season has come
to an end. With only 86 swimmers, the
Waves managed to bring home the 2nd place trophy for Division
13. The Waves missed 1st
place by only six points, to Lexington Woods, a team with over 150
swimmers.
Awards Night was on June 30th
and the top awards went to:
·
Garrett
Wescott for Highest points scored for the team (91)
Of the Waves’ 86 swimmers,
36 qualified for invitational meets.
The Waves would also like to
thank all of our sponsors, who helped to make this swim year so successful. We
especially want to thank Ann Koelling and her son Craig, for being so helpful
and supportive to the team. We loved
having their smiling faces around.
I hope that next year there will be more people willing to take
the plunge and join the team.
For more information on the
season and for a list of the sponsors, see pages 4 and 5.
Independence Day Festivities Included Parade; Water
Games by
Richard Murphy
Fourth of July Parade and
festivities went very well, and we stayed dry. Grand Marshall, Jo McDonald rode
in style in a brand new convertible Solara, courtesy of Haas Toyota. Jo was voted Principal of the Year for SISD
Elementary schools. The kids followed
her as if they were in school, only this time they had bicycle tires under
them. Mr. Ken Faour provided all with
delicious fruits from Schoenman Produce. Thank you Mr. Faour.
Cindy Poetz and Beth Anne
Lechmann also contributed greatly to the efforts. Lifeguards supervised many pool games for fun after the
parade. The day would not have been
complete without the adults besting our teens at water polo 7 to 5.
Many first place awards were
given to decorated bicycles. Oh, and
for those who did not attend, some antique car owners actually braved the
weather and took their prized possessions out.
It was really a grand event.
Special thanks to swim team,
especially Gail Wescott and Karen McConnell for providing concessions as many
stayed at the pool until almost 1 PM when rain started.
July 4 falls on a Wednesday
next year so make plans to “ride” in one way or another.
The Westador Information Sheet is Printed Quarterly
The Westador information sheet is printed quarterly or more often in
the event of some major changes. Of
special interest are the teen helpers anxious to baby-sit, cook, and to do yard
work while earning a buck or two in the process.
Denise Landers and David Lott have joined the
Westador volunteer group as block and section captains, replacing retiring Ed
Roth, a long time Westador volunteer.
The next printing
of the information sheet is set for the August issue. Additional sheets can be obtained from the editor of the Westwind
Pools to Get New Fences by Doug Barnes,
WCA Grounds Director
Due to a variety of factors that include code compliance and,
unfortunately, several acts of vandalism, both the Nanes and Cali pools will be
getting new seven foot tall wrought iron fences. At the Nanes pool the new fence will replace the chain link fence
(on the west side) between the pool and the play area and will also replace the
wood fence that parallels Tuliptree as well as replace the chain link fence on
the east side that runs from the club house to the tall wood fence on the north
side of the pool. At Cali a new fence will
be installed on the back (West side) where there is currently a wood fence
between the pool and office buildings.
Here the wood fence will be left in place; it is felt that both fences
will be a greater deterrent to vandals who have been kicking in the wood fence
to access the pool. The project will be
completed during July. The iron fence
material will be powder coated for corrosion protection to ensure a long
service life.
Association Accountant To Retire by
John Cullinan, WCA Treasurer
After more than 11 years as
the association accountant, Nelson Jones has announced his intention to retire
from handling the Westador accounting duties.
Nelson has served the subdivision admirably for all these years, and the
Board wishes to express its thanks and appreciation to Nelson for his fine
efforts. We wish him all the best in
his leisure years.
Although Nelson’s contract
was up on June 30th, he has agreed to stay on until a replacement is
found and to assist in the transition. A
committee, made up of Don Markus, Nelson, and myself, will soon review the
qualifications of interested candidates and recommend to the Board the best
candidate for the position. This
process will begin immediately because the transition will likely take some
time to complete.
Residents interested in the
position are invited to contact the Westador Civic Association at P. O. Box
1052, Cypress, Texas 77410-1052.
If your trash pickup is
missed or bungled, please report it to Republic Waste’s Customer Service group
(281-540-0513 or 281-446-2030).
Some Homeowners
Have Not Paid Their Annual Maintenance Assessments as of July 10, 2006
Homeowners who are
delinquent on the annual maintenance fees incur interest, collection and legal
fees, have lien notices filed on their property, and are prohibited from using
common facilities such as the tennis courts, pools, and clubhouses. This
month one address was deleted where the homeowner began making payments and 23
addresses were added that had new Lien Notices filed in June 2006.
The
following list of addresses reflect only those homeowners who have a Lien
Notice filed on their property or are delinquent for more than one year as of
July 10, 2006 (and are not making regular payments).

Also, the Board has
authorized stopping the trash and garbage collection service for homeowners who
are delinquent for more than one year.
If delinquent homeowners are making monthly payments in accordance with
an arranged payment plan, that homeowner’s address will not be listed and trash
and garbage collection service will not be suspended unless they cease to
comply with the arranged payment plan.
All homeowners who have not
yet paid their maintenance fee are urged to do so promptly. The
2006 fee, due January 1, 2006, was mailed to homeowners in mid November. On June 15, 2006, Lien Notices were filed on
properties that had no payments on their 2006 fee.
Contact the Westador Accountant, Nelson Jones at
281-351-2010, to make payment arrangements.
To all Westador home schoolers and those who
are considering home schooling:
There will be a meeting to meet, fellowship,
and share information about home schooling at Erin Lichnovsky's house on
Thursday, July 27th at 7 PM. Her home
is at 1123 Loire. For more information, and to RSVP, contact Nana Midcap or Erin
Lichnovsky
Also, check out the Texas Home School
Coalition's website, WWW.THSC.Org, to find
information regarding their State Convention and Family Conference to be held
at the Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel, August 17th-19th.
The Westador Waves swim team
participates in the North West Aquatic League (NWAL). This league is comprised of 18 different divisions with each
division having approximately five or six swim teams within them. The teams come from all around the Houston
area, from the Woodlands to Pasadena, and from College Station to Huntsville.
Each division is determined
by several factors. The two most
important factors that will place a team in a division are the location of the
team and the size of the team. Another
factor that will help determine where the team is to be placed is the level of
competition within that team - have they swum before and where did they place
in the past?
Each team in each division
must swim against each other in what is called a dual meet. These are like practice meets for each team
to size up their competition. These meets go on throughout the season leading
up to the Divisional Meet. Divisional Meets are technically the only meets
within the division that count. This
meet will determine the placement of each team within that division, regardless
of the outcomes of the dual meets. This
is why most coaches will be very determined to have all if not at least the
best of the their swimmers at this meet.
Throughout the regular
season, dual meets and divisional meets, swimmers are timed for every
stroke. This is to give the coaches a
way of setting up their dual and divisional meets competitively. Throughout the season the swimmer will have
the opportunity to try to reach Invitational time limits. Gender, age, and stroke for each
invitational meet set these times.
An Invitational Meet is a
meet where the swimmer is invited to compete with all the other swimmers
throughout the league. They are
generally meets that are done by the individual swimmers, but if a team has
enough swimmers that qualify the team will get points, just like in an ordinary
meet. There are four invitational meets
in which a Wave swimmer can participate.
Pentathlon – This meet has each participating swimmer
swimming all five strokes - freestyle, back, breast, butter, and individual
medley.
Red, White and Blue – This meet has two sets of
qualifying times, red and blue, with blue times being the faster times. This is
usually always the largest invitational meet. The qualifying times are easier
to achieve and it is more likely for teams to compete.
All-Stars – This meet has faster qualifying
times than Red/White. This meet will have faster swimmers and some of these
swimmers will be more likely to swim year round.
Ponderosa – This meet is the “Super Bowl” of all the
invitational swim meets. The qualifying
times are the fastest of all the invitational meets. This meet generally has mostly year round swimmers and most of
the qualifying swimmers are from the top divisions of the league. Joel Petrakovitz and Garret Wescott
qualified to swim in this meet.
Participation in these
invitational meets is optional. The
decision to participate in them is entirely up to each swimmer and their
family.

Thirty
Six Wave Swimmers Qualify for Invitationals by Gail Wescott
The Wave season has two
parts—Divisionals and Invitationals.
The Divisionals (hosted in 2006 at Westador) established the season
winners and the Waves came in second for the second year in a row, this year
with only 86 swimmers.
Of these swimmers, 36
swimmers qualified for the Invitationals, as follows:
Corey Attaway Jiovanni Janoski Lillian Park
Sarah Atkins Sasha Janoski Alexandra Perez
Jennifer Baldwin Justin Johnson Adam Perez
Bailey Cocks Benjamin Lechmann Joel Petrakovitz
Ethan Crain Elizabeth Lechmann Payula Shapiro
George Davila Rachel Lechmann Charlott Sneddon
Sean Davila Mandi Midcap Erica Villarreal
Elise DeBenito Pat Mirrieless Kailey Wade
Raqual DeBenito Shannon Montes Tyler Wade
Taylor Farmer Caitlin Nelson-Severe Garret Wescott
Kourtney Grove James Park Greg Wescott
The Waves’ season requires
as many as one hundred volunteers at a meet, sponsors to bridge the financial
gap between fees paid by families of the swimmers, and support of the Westador
Civic Association. Most of all,
however, the Waves need the eligible children of Westador to swim, to learn to
swim, to enjoy the experience of competing in meets, and to participate in the
vibrant atmosphere that surrounds the Westador Waves.
Coaches Geoff
Wescott and Rickye Grove are the main reasons the kids did so well this year,
and on behalf of the team, the parents and the board, I would like to thank you
from the bottom of my heart. The
coaches on a team can make or break the team Thank you and we will hopefully
see you again next year.
Special thanks
go to the handymen, the guys who kept disasters from happening - Skip Midcap,
John Lechmann, Charlie Wade, and Guy Wescott. Without these guys we would have
had some major troubles. Thanks guys.
I also want to thank the swim team board
for their never-ending participation before and during the season.

Security by Sue Strawbridge
National Night Out is
Tuesday, August 1, 2006 from 6 to 9 PM.
Join the thousands of citizens in Houston, Harris County, and the Nation
in this annual event. The purpose is
for you to meet your neighbors and watch out for each other to help stamp out
crime.
National Night Out is
designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for,
and participation in, local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit
and police community partnerships, and send a message to criminals letting them
know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
Westador residents are
encouraged to organize block parties in order to achieve the above goals, to
make new acquaintances, and especially to welcome new residents. If nothing else, take a walk on National
Night Out and stop to visit with others who are similarly out on that night.
Our deputies encourage you to watch out for your neighbors and report any suspicious activity or persons in the subdivision by calling 713-221-6000.
Fall registration is
beginning soon. Our season will begin
September 9, 2006. Any child born
between August 1, 1987 and August 31, 2003 is eligible to play. The early registration fee is $85. After
August 5, 2006 the fee will be $100.
The fee includes a full uniform for all ages and for our new
pre-k and kindergarten players a ball and shin guards. Registration forms can
be picked up at our office located in Meyer Park, located on Cypresswood
between Stuebner Airline and Champion Forest Drive. Forms are also available on our web site WWW.KleinSoccerClub.Org. New players need to bring a birth
certificate. Our office hours are 4
until 7 PM Monday through Friday. If
the office is closed, forms are available outside by the side door and can be
deposited into the mailbox by the side door.
Pre-k and kindergarten
soccer is played under a modified set of rules. The teams play 3 on a side with no goalie. We would like for the children to learn a
little about soccer and have a lot of fun.
These teams are coed. This is also a good time to ease parents (who
don’t know anything about soccer) into this fast growing sport.
We offer “all boys”
and “all girls” teams from 1st grade through 10th
grade. Teams are formed by subdivision
and school. Games are on Saturdays for
boy and girl teams through the 8th grade. The older boys’ and girls’
teams play on Sunday afternoons. We
again this season make technique-training sessions available to players 1st
grade and up. These sessions led by
professional trainers focus on improving individual skills.
High school students
interested in little exercise and meeting some new people should try on of our
coed teams. Talk to your friends and register in groups. For more information call 281-320-2211.
Special Saturday registrations will be held Saturday August 5th and 12th from 9
AM until 5 PM.
